The 2012 Comment Challenge Finale!!!

More than 150 participants.

With a goal of 100 comments each.

Over 21 days.

That's 15,000 comments.

15,000 connections, just in our world of people blogging about children's literature.

That's community.  Or, in pictures...

lonely blogger

five-a-day commenter

commenter with a new habit!

ten of us with a new habit!!!!!!!!!!

150 of us with a new habit makes a COMMUNITY!

So whether you reached your commenting goal, or started reading blogs with a more participatory mind-set, or just felt more connected, we hope you've created a new habit... and that you'll continue your commenting on kid lit blogs throughout the year ahead.

If you'd like to be in our random prize drawings, please leave a comment (of course!) here and/or at MotherReader's with your final thoughts about the challenge, your how-you-did comment tally (honor system), and luck will determine the rest.

There will be prizes for those who made 100 and for those who just gave it a good try as well...

Thanks again for participating in the 2012 Comment Challenge, and keep on Commenting!

Lee

I averaged 25 comments this week, but I still didn't make it through the comment challenge list. I did keep up better with the blogs in my reader, so that's some kind of improvement!

Thanks for hosting the challenge again this year--you and MR bring value to the blogging community.

No prizes for me, I don't think I really did well enough to earn any, but thanks for offering!

Hi Lee! I enjoyed participating in this Comment Challenge. Even though we started quite late (19th of January), my update indicated that I was able to post 127 comments in all (not bad, huh). My detailed update on the comments I have posted could be found here:

http://gatheringbooks.wordpress.com/2012/01/21/comment-challenge-an-update/

Congratulations on such a successful challenge! And yes, I do feel even more connected! :)

I made 100 last night--hard to believe! I'm following at least ten new blogs, and I'm a *better* follower of a bunch more that I had already followed. I'm definitely over any lingering comment shyness, and I got comments from several new folks at my blog. Overall, it was a grand success, I'd say!

I did it! I did a minimum of five comments a day (I didn't count responses to comments on my own blog) and finished with a respectable 107 comments (not including today). I started by using the sign-up list but for the past week have been concentrating on those nice enough to comment on my own blog. Thanks everyone!

Heather said...

Well, I almost made it! My comment total ended up around 80 or so, but I am now in the habit of actually commenting on the blogs that catch my attention instead of nodding to myself and moving on. Thanks for running this challenge!

Yay for another great Comment Challenge that led me to new-to-me bloggers and news and resources too! I made the 100 club even though I missed two days -- just went crazy with the comments the two days after. :)Total comments=102, counting this one. Something I tried to do this time was comment back ON MY OWN BLOG. This seems like such a nobrainer, but it's not something I normally do -- and it's certainly community building! Thanks to you and Pam for providing the push.

What a great way to build up the book blogging community!

Despite off-time for travel, I did make 100+ comments during the 21 days of the Challenge. Sometimes I visited a blog just once to comment, other times I found such great content on a given blog that I returned to comment over and over.

Thanks to you and MotherReader for spearheading this and prompting me to find - and enter conversations with - new favorite book blogs. And a zillion thanks for directing readers to my newish YA book blog, which upped my blog traffic quite noticeably.

I'll be continuing through the Comment Challenge blog list on MotherReader since there are still participants whose blogs I haven't visited yet. Looking forward to January 2013's Comment Challenge!

121 comments left by Swagger during the course of the Challenge. Thanks for hosting! There's so much out there to visit and a blog challenge is a great way to deviate from our normal routines and expand our horizons.

Thanks Pam and Lee for a great comment challenge. I managed over 100. Didn't get to all the blogs as this past week, I found myself either responding to people who had been kind enough to comment on my blog, or returning to those blogs where I felt a connection. Hope you do this again next year!

Can I just say how much I love the Comment Challenge? It really got me out of my comment-shell and forced me to check out awesome blogs I might have missed otherwise. I've still got a couple more comments for today, but the total so far is 110. Woohoo!

One problem I just started running into over the last week--I'm having a hard time posting comments via Wordpress Open ID on blogger. It keeps refreshing back to the word verification and saying I didn't type it in right. This is fine if I can do name/url instead, but sometimes blogs don't offer that option and I can't post my comments. I want to share the love! Anyone else run into this?

Alex said...

I made the 5 comments a day and found a bunch of new blogs to follow.

Since last year's comment challenge I have tried to keep the habit and have pretty much succeeded.

Thank you for hosting this again this year with MotherReader.

I completely lost count how many comments I've made. Tons! But I guess that was the point. I've become much more conscientious about leaving comments and replying to those who leave comments on my blogs. Thanks so much for this! I also was introduced to so many awesome blogs!

I checked in at Mother Reader, but wanted to leave a comment saying thanks for hosting this every year. I do love the kick start in January it gives me to be more involved.

Elizabeth Rose Stanton said...

I comment so much, I lost count ;)
Blog on! Comment on! :)

Gregory K. said...

Sigh. I fell short of the goals, both in total number and consistency. I was bunchy - 10 comments one day, then none for two. Still, I became much more aware of taking a moment to type my thoughts rather than just think my thoughts. Plus, I found some great new reading. So for me, I'd dub it a success.

And again, thanks to you and Mother Reader for the inspiration.

I got to 167! Thanks for hosting. This was fun. It jump-started my commenting again after a lull in November and December.

Hi Lee! I made 95 comments, and wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Comment Challenge. Posting comments on different blogs felt more comfortable. Now I can honestly say that I've developed a good daily habit.

Linda at teacherdance said...

I always comment a lot, and averaged 20 or more a day depending on what day, but many of those are in blogging communities I participate in. What the comment challenge did was help me find others in order to widen the circles. I added a dozen to my reader, & like someone earlier said, I will continue to explore the list because I still didn't get to everyone. Thanks very much for doing this. A final observation--Each person has their own style of commenting-very fun!

JenFW said...

I'm not sure if commenting will prove to be a habit, but I can say with confidence that I feel much more comfortable commenting now than I did 21 days ago. In fact, I kind of like it. Who knew commenting could be so fun?

I, too, am not through the participants list, and hope to keep working on it.

I'm not finished, but I'm at 113 now, so that's what I'm calling it.

Truly an excellent experience. Thanks, Lee!

I made my goal of 100 comments on blogs I haven't been in the habit of commenting on (many new to me). My total comments in the three weeks would be way over that -- I didn't count the comments I made on blogs I regularly interact on (nor of course did I count all the responses I regularly make on my own blog).

I wasn't as regular about my commenting in the second two weeks -- frankly, it took way more of my time than I expected getting through all the people who had signed up that first week.

It did put me in touch with some great new blogs, got me into the habit of remembering my google reader and using it regularly, and brought a few new commenters (not many) to my blog.

Lee-I have to say one more time what this challenge has done for me. Two years ago (wow!) I connected with my dear friend, coworker, and lifetime partner in crime, Jon. All because of your wonderful challenge. Thanks to you and MotherReader. :)

Lee, This is Susan at Pen and Ink. I had a wonderful time doing this.
I visited every blog on the challenge list and a few more. This is my 212th comment. I am not counting any comments that I made on our blog.
I have new blogs to follow, a new TBR list and Pen and Ink received a lot of comments. My favoite post was How to Improve Your Workplace with Sharks. I sent you the link to that yesterday.

Helena Juhasz said...

It was surprisingly easy and I'm totally addicted! Final total was 110. It could've been way higher but I had to pull myself away from the computer most nights!

Christy Rush-Levine said...

I totaled 119 comments! This was just the kick in the pants I needed to start speaking up and interacting rather than just reading blogs. I think it will be a relief to stop keeping track, but I will definitely keep up the habit--I found too many good blogs not to!

Carrie Monroe said...

This is great. Thank you for hosting this great challenge.

Caryl said...

This has been a wonderful exercise. I tend to be shy about commenting, but I believe I'm over that now. I posted 111 comments over these last three weeks! Thanks, Lee & Pam.

Marjorie said...

Well, I didn't quite make it - I started late and got to 76 comments - but it has been such a great way to kick start new habits for a new year. I've made new connections, found new blogs, got into some great discussions and thank both you and Mother Reader for hosting this. One thing I haven't really learnt is to leave a quick comment and that will be a goal - not to waffle (wow, how did Mrs Silverstein manage to leave 100 comments in one day - gulp!). Now I'm going to carry on and get to know the blogs from the Challenge I didn't manage to visit in the last couple of weeks...

Linda at teacherdance said...

I thought I posted earlier, but perhaps I just thought I did. I comment often, so went way over the 100 comments, and am still visiting some on the roll. It was great fun to find new blogs to see what else is out there. Thanks very much for hosting this challenge.

Bravo, Lee! You make me wish that every month was Comment Challenge month. This whole experience has been fantastic (as always!)

I have discovered SO MANY authors and illustrators with blogs these past few weeks. It's really gotten me out of my comfort zone and discovering so much that's new in the blogosphere. Thanks again.

MotherReader said...

Okay, I'm calling it with 170 comments. I haven't made it through all of the participants, but I've hit the wall on commenting today. I'll get back to the few I've missed in the next two days.

Thanks for doing this with me, Lee. It was exactly what I needed to do - step out of myself and my blog and look around the community. I've found writing blogs that have me charged up about well, writing, and I've had a great time. Thanks!

Amy LV said...

I joined late, lost ground a bit, but I caught up and made 101 comments (102 counting this note!)

Once more, I found it refreshing to start the year by getting to know some new blogs and reacquainting myself with some old favorites. I joined a few and learned a lot.

Many thanks! a.

Patty said...

I didn't even count but I know I commented a lot and it was fun!!!

Michelle Cusolito said...

I made it to 84 comments. I confess, when I signed up, I didn't consider that the volume of comments on my blog would go up. I always respond to comments on my blog, so in addition to commenting each day, I had to respond to those left on my blog. A good "problem" to have, I'd say!

Since I was also preparing my submission materials for our upcoming NESCBWI conference, I just couldn't keep up the pace. I did, however, complete my submission packet.

Thanks for this push to start commenting more. I discovered kindred spirits around the world and now follow at least 7 more blogs (I lost track of how many- they'll magically appear in my inbox or reader and I'll remember). I also have a large TBR list.

Mary Jo Guglielmo said...

Thanks for organizing. After I hit 100 I stopped counting, and that was on the weekend, so not sure what I'm up to now. I found new blogs to follow and enjoyed the process.

Beth said...

Thanks for running this challenge! I like having the list of blogs over at motherreader (I made it through them all, although I didn't comment on everything), and it was also fun wandering through the blog rolls of sites I found interesting.

And I've rarely made it so far down my reader.

MaryHelen said...

Thank you for hosting. I will continue to check in on blogs as I did not finish reading throughe eryone's. I was able to comment on 61, as I was snagged with a funeral. I appreciated the wonderful and uplifting comments shared on my post. I was encouraged to keep posting as well as read others. This is a great way to start the new year.

KateCoombs said...

Hooray! I nearly missed 2 days ago, but got my comments done at 11:30 p.m. Have accomplished 5 per day, start to finish. (It helps to keep a list.) As I mentioned previously, I used the challenge to clean up my blog roll. Now I plan to find new sites through other people's blog rolls and continue commenting at the rate of 1-2 a day for at least a month. You guys are great! Thank you!

Charlotte said...

I squeeked in with just over 100 comments, due to a Big Push yesterday....

thanks so much, Pam and Lee, for organizing it! It really did push me to make that extra effort.

Ms. O said...

I lost count. Didn't end up making it the entire way but it was still so much fun!

Sally said...

I didn't make it to 100 - but got close. Wish I'd seen this challenge earlier. Did find some new friends and new blogs to follow.

Thanks for hosting the comment challenge and for visiting my blog Lee! I don't know my total but I do know that I found and commented on lots of great new blogs! :)

Sylvia Liu said...

Thanks for hosting this challenge. I did about 80 comments in a concentrated period of about 10 days (started late and ended early), but loved finding new blogs and connecting with others in the kidlitosphere.

Thanks Lee for blogging about this challenge. I met some really great people over the course of these few weeks. And I now follow some more creative blogs! Can't wait for next year :)
